1. Random Joints
If you are not particular about the joints, allow the balcony decking to come in random joints. Random joints allow the wastages of materials to be kept low. As such, there is no need for clients to be charged extra wastage of materials.
Comparing the two pictures above, assuming same materials and same area, the decking with random joints will cost less than the decking with controlled joints. When joints are controlled, the actual materials consumed for the balcony decking can be as high as 120% to 180% of the actual area. Most clients are not particular about joints and would accept random joints to avoid extra charges for the decking.
2. Timing of work
A significant part of the balcony decking cost is the time consumed by the installers to do it. As such, allow contractors to work full day from morning to late afternoon. Such arrangement allows contractors to minimize the number of trips to complete the works. If, for whatever reason, you need to split the installation work into two different phases, there will likely to be some additional costs as well for time wastage.
Any works that are to be done in the evening will have extra charges. Besides, lack of sunlight will affect the process of the work.
3. Removable or Fixed Decking
These days, technological advancements allow clients to select removable decking.
This removable system is more expensive than the traditional fixed one. If it is not necessary, you may opt for the fixed decking type, with access panels only above necessary areas, such as drain points.
4. Durability of Materials
Long term maintenance should also be taken into consideration. Natural wood placed outdoor is likely to have issues over time, such as discoloration and cracks, etc. As such, composite wood decking is a more preferred option nowadays as they have close to zero maintenance required over the long run.
